Questions & Answers About The Grandparent Zone

And Your Question is ....?
What made you decide to start thegrandparentzone.com?

After considerable research into niche markets, it was determined that “Baby Boomers” would start becoming grandparents in record numbers.  The founders of TheGrandparentZone.com are Baby Boomers, and they applied their own experiences with respect to where they might live, how they will probably communicate and interact with their adult children and their grandchildren using the Internet, and what books, toys and equipment they used most when their now grown-up kids were infants, toddlers and children.  One of the more fun “roles” of grandparents is to spoil their grandchildren in many ways, including giving gifts.  That’s how TheGrandparentZone.com was conceived.

Where did you get the idea for the products on the website?

One of the founders is a career educator with more than 30 years in public education.  She has the researched-based and practical experience to know which developmental toys and books help children learn.  The founders want people to be able to use their website as a reliable resource for choosing and purchasing the best quality, safest and most educational toys, books and special jewelry for their grandchildren of all ages.

Much of what you see on the website are products that the founders owned when they were new parents.  They have also kept a lot of it, dragging it all over America, so that they could give it to their kids when they had children of their own.  In other words, the items are classics.  They wanted to offer safe, excellent quality products for people to buy.  As an example, the wooden toys, games and puzzles are similar to those that they had … in fact, they are identical to the ones they actually used when they were children, more than 50 years ago.  There is something comforting about familiarity.  In addition, they wanted to be able to address the recent issues with toy recalls and poor quality control with many imported toys, and they think they’ve done that by offering the items that are made in America.  Every item must have lead-free and non-toxic paints and stains or they don’t offer it.

The read-aloud classic children’s books are ones that they actually still have on their bookshelves.  They have fond and lasting memories of reading each one to our their children, and their children share those memories with them on a frequent basis.

They have also chosen some special gifts that the grandparents might like for themselves … self-indulgence items.  The founders have artist friends who live in Laguna Beach, CA, and they enjoy these artists’ crafts.  That’s why you’ll find some incredible scrimshaw pieces, shark’s tooth necklaces, and a hand-made scarf, called the “Pamplona.”  Finally, you’ll find some aerosculptures (hand-made Philippine mahogany models of collectible military and civilian airplane) that you can display proudly in your office, den or wherever, and hand-made Philippine mahogany military seals for veterans or active duty military folks.

Who is the ideal client?

The ideal client is anyone who is comfortable with using the Internet to purchase items, and who wants to find unique, different and high quality gifts for their families, grandchildren or themselves.  While the primary target is “Baby Boomer grandparents,” any adult, especially senior citizens, is welcome and important.  They are looking for individuals who want to pamper and/or spoil someone special in their respective lives.

What makes this website different from other toy/child product providers?

The founders are a happily married successful couple with professional careers in business and education.  They know how they expect to be treated in retail transactions, and they have made that the standard for their website with customer satisfaction and site security being most important.  There are many “contact touch points” throughout the site, in order to communicate with customers in order to advise or teach in response to their questions.  As an example, there is a “Concierge” who will assist with trying to find items that a potential customer might want but cannot find on this site or on the web.  TheGrandparentZone.com will share its discovery with that customer, and will direct them to the appropriate location.  There is absolutely no cost for this service.  It is hoped that the website Concierge will result in referrals by those customers to their friends, and that those friends will become customers as well.

In addition, the website is not offering mass-produced and trendy items that can be found throughout the Internet so that price becomes the differentiator.  TheGrandparentZone.com has unique, sometimes one-of-a-kind products.

Tell me a little bit about your business background and how that has helped you in putting this website together.

One of the partners has spent more than 30 years in business with two large multi-national companies.  The other partner has been a career educator for more than 30 years with specialties in reading development, counseling and character education.  Between them, they have the quantitative and qualitative skills to deal with almost anything related to this website.  At the top of that dynamic is a focus toward customer satisfaction and exceeding expectations in everything that they do.

What's your long-term goal for the business?

To be easily discovered on search engines and to consistently exceed customer expectations for every transaction and at every touch point.   Afterwards, the goal is to be recognized a simple, secure, reliable and familiar place where families, especially grandparents, can return frequently for resources, ideas and gift ideas.
