Scrimshaw, first practiced by sailors working on whaling ships out of New England, is the art form traditionally associated with the American whaling industry, and it is considered by some to be the only art form that originated in America. The scrimshaw works of art produced in these early times is very collectible and quite valuable
These sailors, who spent long periods at sea, took a sharp knife to whales' teeth to engrave a picture, and the craft of scrimshaw was born. After engraving the image, soot was rubbed into the lines showing black on a white background. In contemporary scrimshaw, ink is often used to fill the engraving. With its variety of colors derived from minerals in the surrounding earth, fossil ivory is a beautiful alternative to banned white ivory.

Clipper, was the name applied to a ship to indicate that it was a very fast sailer. This scrimshaw carving of a Clipper Ship is one of the scrimshaw works of art, and it is carved on fossil Woolly Mammoth tusk which sits atop a custom base of Black Walnut. The beautiful, one-of-a-kind work of art, is 3" tall and 2 3/4" wide at the bottom of the base. Other nautical scenes include the whale ship, Niger, "Davits," whaling scenes on either a fossil ice ax or a fossil sled runner, and a fantastic reproduction of a Hieronymus Bosch drawing.

You might be interested to learn about where you can find a Woolly Mammoth tusk? On the left, Ray is pictured above with a nearly intact fossilized Woolly Mammoth tusk that he found in the Alaskan Permafrost. Permafrost is vital because it is important that the ground, in which the tusks are buried, stays frozen year round. If the ground thawed, the tusks would become petrified, and lose their beauty. See the beautiful and unique scrimshaw works of art that he has made out of tusks like the one pictured on the left. |
