Libros En Español
Many children in the US grow up in homes where two or more languages are spoken. Even parents in homes that speak one language may wish to introduce other languages to their children at a very early age. Many studies show that the earlier and more often a child hears another language, the easier it will be for the child to learn that language later on. As an example, these days it is quite common for parents to teach their infants sign language to help them to communicate with them during those long periods when they know what they want, but do not have the verbal skills yet to let you know.
It is fortunate that many of the well-known and beloved children’s books have been translated into other languages, including Spanish. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the US and many children’s books and television shows like Dora the Explorer, Handy Manny, and Sesame Street encourage children to become familiar with it. Libros – or ‘books’ for those of you who haven’t watched an episode of Sesame Street lately – like the classic, “Goodnight, Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown has become “Buena Noches, Luna”. Either way, it is still a beautiful and calming story of winding down a busy day by wishing everything in baby’s room a good night, including the moon. This story has been read millions of times by millions of parents as part of their bedtime routine and it is a wonderful story to read in Spanish.
Other great children’s books titles include “Mas Mas Mas, Dijo El Bebe” (“More More More, Said the Baby), a story of three babies and how they are loved and shown attention from a father, a mother, and a grandmother. Two other great books that have been translated into Spanish are by Ginger Foglesong Guy. The first is “Mi Abuelita” (My Grandma”) and the other is “Mi Escuela” (“My School”). “Mi Abuelita” follows a father and his children as they prepare to visit Grandma’s house. It teaches simple words and phrases such as, Buenos dias (Good morning) and trambia (bus). “Mi Escuela” reinforces many of the common items found in a school setting in Spanish. These books serve as a great way for adults to become more familiar with the Spanish language as well as children.
Many of the children’s books are bilingual and list both the English and the Spanish words for everything. These stories are fun to read and to learn from. It’s amazing how many toddlers will have no problem adjusting to two or even more languages and will be able to use them interchangeably.
You will be able to find many of these titles and others like them in your local bookstores. Some titles may be harder to find than others and in those cases, you should be able to find the book online. Many sites specialize in gift ideas and children’s books in both English and Spanish. No matter what book you purchase the most important part of giving books as a gift is reading them to your child everyday. That is the real gift.
