Much of the fossil ivory found today is in the form of broken or worn sled runners, ice axes, spear points, net sinkers, needles and other discarded household items left to sit preserved in the village “dump.” The recent ban on new ivory warranted the effort of digging into the hard, frozen ground to recover the fossil material.
