Davits
Product #:
8058
Brand:
Ray Caruso
Description:
A
davit
is a structure, usually made of steel, which is used to lower things over the edge of a long drop, such as launching a lifeboat over the side of a ship. As you can see from the wonderfully detailed scrimshaw etching, by master scrimshander, Ray Caruso, davits weren't always steel. In this scene, you will notice that the davits on the old wooden whaling vessels, were cut from timbers, though their function was as described earlier; lowering a boat over the side of the ship. While these boats could have served as lifeboats, if necessary, they were probably used more frequently to carry whalers with harpoons and other weapons and tools to where the whale was surfacing.
This absolutely exquisite piece, with phenomenal detailed etching, is on a large cross-section of fossil Woolly Mammoth ivory, measuring 6 1/2' X 3". It sits atop a custom base of Black Walnut.
