Ride-On Toys For 2-Year Olds
I don’t know how much we actually remember about those times when our own children were two years old – other than we were told they were the in their “terrible twos”. But unless you are around toddlers on a regular basis you may not remember exactly what that age is like. For one thing, most children at that age love to be mobile. They love toys that allow them to go places and to mimic grown-up’s actions. Whether the action that is being copied is riding a bike, driving a car or fire engine, or flying a plane, two-year old toddlers adore being able to act “grown-up”.
Coincidentally, some of the best toys for two-year olds are the same toys that we gave our children as youngsters. Sometimes, you just can’t go wrong with the originals. Good, old-fashioned pedal or ride-on toys fill all of the “fun requirements” for any two-year old. Because they continually come out with a variety of styles and types of vehicles, it solves the problem of trying to find one that is just right for your grandchild. And although they may look vintage, they are very modern and have been manufactured according to all of today’s safety standards for children’s toys.
These means that they are painted and decorated with lead-free paint and have padded seats along with non-slip, rubber pedals and wheels. Most pedal ride-on toys are equipped with a steering mechanism, which is perfect for 2-year olds since most of them have mastered the concept of “action and reaction” by this age. - One of my brood is 18 months old and he can pedal like a house on fire. He is a real go-getter, but he clearly doesn’t understand that he needs to turn the steering wheel or he will run right into that couch! It’s amazing how much more they understand in another 6 months.
Even the traditional tricycle has been updated for today’s toddlers. Tricycles come in many different sizes, shapes, and colors now. Fitting the properly sized trike with the right tyke will make a world of difference. A tricycle that is too big for a 2-year old poses a danger because the little one cannot reach the pedals or the ground properly. If their feet do not reach the ground then they are more susceptible to falling off. No longer are you limited to the traditional little red tricycle either. Many locations and websites sell tricycles in many other colors and styles.
As was stated before, two-year olds love to copy grown-ups. Furthermore, some children seem to take an instant liking, almost to the point of obsession, to groups of people or professions such as construction workers, fire fighters, bus drivers or pilots. A ride-on toy gives them the opportunity to “become” what they already love and admire. And you will feel good about giving a pedal toy because it is also a healthy activity. A pedal ride-on toy promotes physical exertion rather than just sitting on a motorized toy does and it also encourages a vivid imagination. And as an aside, those of us who grew up with "The Mickey Mouse Club" might remember "The Adventures Of Spin And Marty." It made me want to be a cowboy, and every time I saw a horse, I wanted to ride it. My only horse option at that point was my brother's rocking horse on springs, and I clobbered up, big time. Too bad he didn't have a wooden rocking horse, 'cause he still might have it.
These well-constructed toys can last to become classics themselves. Who knows? Maybe someday your grandchildren will be passing these toys down to their own grandchildren! Stick with a classic and get a ride-on toy for the 2-year old in your life.
